Choosing your wedding colours is possibly one of the biggest and most important decisions of planning a wedding; it sets the tone of the whole day and its also what a lot of other important decisions are based on - from your wedding stationary to bridesmaid dresses, venue decor and even your cake design.
Choosing your wedding colours isn’t just about what’s “pretty” — it’s about what feels natural to you and looks right in the season you’re getting married.
The most beautiful, effortless weddings are the ones where the colours harmonise with the light, the surroundings, and the flowers that are naturally in bloom.
So, how do you choose the right colour scheme for your own wedding?
Start with how you want the day to feel.
Although Pinterest can be your best friend when it comes to wedding inspo - before scrolling aimlessly for hours; first have a think about the emotion you want your wedding to evoke.
Do you want it to feel:
Romantic and timeless? Choose soft blush, pastels and ivory.
Modern and elegant? Pick whites, greens, and muted gold.
Natural and relaxed? Think about earthy tones, dusty pink, and greenery.
Dramatic - consider deep jewel tones, such as rich purples, pinks, and greens.
The colours you’re drawn to naturally say a lot about your personalities as a couple.
Let Your Venue Guide You.
Your venue will influence how colours look in real life. Start with the fixed colours at your venue that you can’t change, such as:
Wall colour, flooring/carpets, drapes, and architectural materials (like exposed stone or wood).
If your venue has a dominant hue (e.g, dramatic wallpaper, exposed beams, gold mirrors), then choose complementary or neutral tones so your flowers don’t clash.
Pay attention to natural light. The amount of daylight your venue gets changes how colours appear:
Bright, sunlit venues can wash out pale tones — opt for mid-tones and textures to create contrast.
Dimly lit or candlelit venues benefit from lighter, reflective tones like ivory, champagne, or pastel shades to lift the space.
Reflect the venue’s personality. Your palette should enhance the mood of the setting - not fight against it:
Barns and rustic buildings/castles: earthy tones, soft greenery, toffee roses, and dried textures.
Manor houses and stately venues: refined palettes — ivory, gold, sage, champagne, and even black if thats your vibe.
Marquees or tipis: natural greens, pastels, and romantic blush tones.
Seaside or outdoor venues: sky blues, sandy neutrals, and crisp whites.
When in doubt, build your palette around the tones already present in your venue.
Choose colours that compliment the season.
When you let the season inspire your colours; your wedding looks effortless - never forced. Each season has it’s own natural rhythm - and your wedding colours should flow with it. This doesn’t mean you have to have pumpkins in autumn, or holly in the winter! The goal isn’t to ‘exactly’ match the season, but to capture its ‘feeling’:
Spring should feel fresh and full of new life
Summer should feel warm and full of joy
Autumn should feel cosy, intimate and rich
Winter should feel magical and enchanting.
Each season naturally produces flowers in certain shades — and those hues always work well together:
Spring: pastel - blush, lilac, peach, pale yellow & white
Summer: bright - coral, hot pink, orange, yellow & blue
Autumn: rich - burnt orange, caramel, burgundy, cream & green
Winter: dramatic - deep purples, reds, pinks, green, white & silver
Staying seasonal keeps your colours vibrant and authentic.
Don’t forget about textures.
Textures also play a big part in the overall look of your colour palette - colour alone can look flat; texture brings it to life. And this is where fresh flowers, foliage and dried materials such as pampas grass, can really elevate the whole of your wedding day aesthetic.
Combine different petal shapes, finishes, and sizes to make your palette richer:
– Soft petals (roses, peonies, ranunculus)
– Frilly edges (lisianthus, carnations)
– Structural accents (anthurium, orchids, pampas grass)E
Even a simple palette looks luxurious when the textures vary.
And this moves us nicely onto how to match your flowers to your colour palette!
Choosing your wedding colours is one thing — but bringing them to life through flowers is where the magic truly happens. Your flowers are what give your palette texture, depth, and personality. They transform a “colour scheme” into an atmosphere.
Nature doesn’t work in solid blocks of colour — and neither should your bouquet. Instead of trying to match your bridesmaid dresses exactly, look for flowers in the same family of tones, for example: If your palette includes dusty blue dresses, use complementary flowers like pale lilac, ivory, or silver-green foliage — it softens the contrast while keeping cohesion.
You don’t need to know every flower by name — you just need to know the feeling you want.
Show your florist your colour palette, mood board, or fabric swatches and talk to them about the feeling and emotion you want your day to bring. They’ll be able to translate that into flower combinations that feel cohesive, romantic, full of life, and most importantly - like you.
That’s the magic of floral design - turning colours into emotion.
Final thoughts.
Your wedding flowers should feel like they belong there. Your colour palette shouldn’t just look cohesive — it should feel right to you as a couple and it should all just come together and flow naturally.
So, when planning your wedding colours; start with emotion and how you want the day to feel; let your venue and the season guide your choices, and then (with the help of your florist), bring it to life through flowers that reflect who you are as a couple.
